Wise Woman Chair Yoga & Qigong
By the time I entered perimenopause back in 2005, I had been practicing Yoga on a daily basis for about 4 years. This dedication to showing up on my mat every morning turned out to be extremely helpful during the years of my midlife transition. In addition to helping me process some of the energies and emotions that were causing many of my menopausal symptoms/challenges, it came to serve as a sort of touchstone where I could check in with myself every morning and get a sense of where I was on my journey. Because of the fatigue and muscle/joint stiffness that often comes with perimenopause, I find it most beneficial during the midlife transition to focus on Chair, Restorative, and Gentle Yoga as a way of opening up the mind and body and bringing about a sense of release and rejuvenation.
What is Chair Yoga?
Chair Yoga is a form of traditional Hatha Yoga performed with the support of a chair. For those who are able, sessions include both seated and standing postures along with breathing exercises and a concluding guided meditation. If you are uncomfortable or unable to perform standing postures, modifications for seated postures for all poses will be offered. While many people tend to think of Chair Yoga as being strictly for senior citizens and folks with limited mobility, it can actually be an extremely beneficial practice for even the most experienced yogi or yogini, offering a new way of approaching and experiencing many traditional Yoga postures.
Like traditional yoga, Chair Yoga is a mind, body, spirit practice that offers many benefits that can help to ease many of the physical and emotional challenges a woman experiences throughout her life cycle. Some of these benefits include:
-Increased flexibility
-Increased muscle and bone strength
-Enhanced immune function
-Increased relaxation
-Improved sleep
-Enhanced mind/body awareness
-Improved hormonal balance
-Improved sense of empowerment
-Managing and healing the effects of trauma
I offer private and group classes in Chair and Gentle Yoga for women of all ages. Each of my classes will also include exercises in Qigong and Energy Healing for Women. Please call or email for more information and to set up a free 15 minute phone consultation. [email protected] or 914-474-8177.
